AI use for teachers (not tech for students)
Friday October 25, 2024 1:00pm - 2:00pm MDT
This session is for teachers who are tired of planning for hours on end, trying to find unique ideas and writing report card comments leave you feeling exhausted. At convention last year a session on AI broke my brain and opened up a world of possibilities for me. There are many tools out there that can make your life as a teacher easier. I would like to introduce you to tools that you as a teacher can use outside of the classroom to make your life inside the classroom easier. If your like me, they may even liven up some family get togethers too! If you have a device bring it along so you can play with some of the features and see how your brain can be broken like mine was.

Math Games that go well beyond the Basics
Friday October 25, 2024 1:00pm - 2:00pm MDT
This session will teach engaging games that entice students to practice quick mental math, mentally multiply large numbers, add and subtract integers, identify GCF and LCM and understand the relationship between them, and compare proper and improper fractions. All of these are done without paper or pencil in competitive games students enjoy. In addition, I’ll include a game that teaches students the importance and power of using tens from the start as they begin to add and subtract mentally.
Key Takeaways: Many math skills take considerable and repeated practice to master. Embedding that repetition in engaging games makes it far more appealing. This session will teach games for comparing fractions, working with integers, identifying GCF and LCM, multiplying large numbers, and doing mental math efficiently.

Creating Independence using "Notebooks"
Friday October 25, 2024 2:30pm - 3:30pm MDT
Are you tired of being asked the same questions a million times? Are frustrated by students asking for help before reading instructions and attempting at finding a solution? Are you worn down by students asking you how to do something immediately after you have spent a lesson teaching it? Are you sick of students asking how you do something the following year – after you spent months teaching it the year before?
This session will demonstrate how I have created notebooks to support my teaching and how to use these notebooks to encourage independence from your students. Warning it takes time and does NOT work 100% but it sure helps.
Don’t Reinvent the Wheel. It helps having a partner. Sharing strengths. The process and anecdotes will be shared. Implementation strategies shared. Exemplars to look at. Sample notebooks will be provided. I am no guru or expert, just a teacher willing to share strategies that are working for me and my partner.

Activating Thinking Routines in a Multi-grade Classroom
Saturday October 26, 2024 10:45am - 11:45am MDT
Do you ever wish you could read the minds of your students? If so, then this is an opportunity for you! This session will explore and model the use of thinking routines and strategies that can inspire and reveal students' understanding of concepts and ideas. We will draw upon the work of brilliant educators from Harvard Education, the Critical Thinking Consortium and our fellow Canadian teachers to:
1. explore how thinking routines can activate and engage students in multigrade classes,
2. reveal the depth of your students' understanding, and
3. implement routines that become familiar to students so you can just focus on the learning.
Join me for an active session that models the use of these tools and gives you access to excellent resources for your use in the future.
